REACH OUT!

In ACE Anti-Bullying Week 2021 we talked to Miss Harrold about her role as Subject Lead for Life Skills. Whilst Miss Harrold is on maternity leave, Miss Coleman and Miss Wreford are sharing Life Skills and PSE as Subject Leads. Miss Wreford is also subject lead for History and P.E. And Miss Coleman is SENDCo and KS1 Lead and head of the Pastoral Support Team. We caught up with them both to see what fun and informative activities pupils will take part in to raise awareness during ACE Anti-Bullying Week 2022!

The theme this year is REACH OUT!

The Anti-Bullying Alliance explains how bullying can leave us feeling hopeless. But it doesn’t have to feel this way. If we challenge it, we can change it. It starts by reaching out

In our ACE Anti-bullying Week 2021, we talked to the Pastoral Support Team about ways in which they support pupils in their Life Skills and work with pupils to support their understanding of friendships and diversity.

Miss Coleman:

COLEMAN JulieOur Pastoral Support Team work across the school to help support children to negotiate building positive relationships and a secure understanding of how they need to treat each other. This message and teaching continues throughout the year through our ACE curriculum.

Anti-bullying week is an excellent opportunity to educate children about what they should do should they find themselves in a situation that makes them feel they or someone they know is experiencing bullying.

We feel it is vital to work with everyone involved from the bystanders, the bullied and the bully and help children to understand what they can do if they find themselves in any of these roles.

We asked Miss Wreford to explain the links between physical activity and learning and well-being.

WREFORD LillyRecent studies show that when children are active their brains are more responsive, therefore they are better able to take on new information.

  • Think! Teamwork helps children feel valued and supported as well as helping them to collaborate
  • Think! about the five ways to well-being through connecting (talk, listen and be present), being active (do what you can, move your mood), take notice (remember the simple things in life), keep learning (embrace new experiences), give (your time, words, presence)
  • Think! Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much
  • Think! Team work makes the dream work!!

At home, school, in our communities or online, if we REACH OUT! We can support each other. We can REACH OUT! to someone you know is being bullied.

We can:-

  • Reflect on our own behaviour
  • Set positive examples
  • Create kinder communities

odd socks day

Astley will kick off ACE Anti-Bullying Week 2022! with an assembly for all pupils on the theme of REACH OUT!

Pupils will also be encouraged to wear odd socks on Monday 14th November to highlight that we are all unique and that's okay.

Pupils will also complete 'Reach Out Pledges' either as a whole class or individually. Look out for these on Twitter!

Each afternoon, pupils will complete activities devoted to ACE Anti-bullying Week, such as thinking about the question, 'Is it bullying if...?', or 'if you had one super power to stop bullying, what would it be...?'

Pupils will also be taking part in respectful class debate and using their ACE skills in persuasive writing to argue a point of view. At the end of the week, parents and carers will be welcomed into school for a shared activity.

Thank you, Miss Coleman and Miss Wreford, for sharing with us the ways in which we can REACH OUT! and keep Astley ACE!!
