ACE History Focus Day 2023

Miss Wreford, can you explain the purpose of curriculum subject focus days at Astley and describe what activities pupils will take part in whilst in their different groups during the day?

The purpose of our ACE days at Astley are to give children more of a wonderful insight into our curriculum subjects. They give pupils the chance to be creative and spend a whole day quenching their thirst for knowledge on a subject and having the time to get their questions about learning answered. Children will be able to take part in a range of different activities around different points in history such as focused activities on the Egyptians, Vikings and Romans. In each class children will focus on a new era and will complete an activity based upon this such as using arts and crafts.

Can you explain to us how dressing up in historical outfits helps pupils to engage with activities on ACE History Focus Day and what period of History will you be dressing up as for the day?

Dressing up helps us to set the scene for the day and puts children into the mindsets of the people they are learning about. It is also wonderful to see the children getting excited and engaging with learning about the different clothing types of people used to wear. I will be dressing up as a lady in the war who helped by working when men went to fight.

How do the different activities of the day link to the ACE History curriculum and how does learning in History help pupils across other ACE Curriculum subjects?

The activities relate to different areas of the curriculum that we cover enhancing our pupil's knowledge. There are also other elements added to our ACE History day, such as the Egyptians to cultivate curiosity. By using cross curricular approaches to learning we hope to engage all our children, immerse them in our ACE History subject and give them some wonderful facts to remember.
